Those Who Have Gone Before Us

Royal Oak Musicale has been privileged to have had so many members who have given so much to the organization through their talent and love of music.  To hallow their memory we offer the following:

JOAN PAULL: Joined Royal Oak Musicle in 1998.  Died January 30, 2015.

MARGARET JEAN ELMS: Joined Royal Oak Musicle in 1967.  Died January 4, 2015.

MILDRED GARDNER: Joined Royal Oak Musicle in 1960.  Died Septmber 22, 2015.

NANCY SCHNEIDER: Life Member joined Royal Oak Musicle in 1973.  Died July 27, 2015.

WARREN McCLURE:  Joined Royal Oak Musicle in 1967.  Died September 14, 2014.

CHARLOTTE LOWERY:  Joined Royal Oak Musicale in 1982.  Died May23, 2013.

ALICE WATCH: Life Member joined Royal Oak Musicale in 1949.  Died March 27, 2014.

EDITH KATHERINE FAIRES: Born in Chesterton, Indiana on February 23, 1918.  Died September 23, 2013.  Music and animals were Edie's passion. She was a member of the choir at Central United Methodist Church in Detroit as well as the Rackham Symphony Choir and the Royal Oak Musicale. She was an active member of the Royal Oak Musicale for 42 years from 1971 until she died.

GRACE BRANN: Born in Detroit on April 1, 1936.  Died August 29, 2013 in Lake City, MI. Grace joined ROM Chorus as a Soprano in 1975 and sang with the Chorus for a few years.  She served on the Tea Committee and Hospitality Committee. She was a member of the St John Luthern Church in Lake City and sang in the choir.

JANET ELIZABETH KOPKA:  Born October 27, 1928 in Morrocco, Indiana; died September 4, 2013.  Jan was a long time member of Royal Oak Musicale, and was president from 1978-1980.  She also was a generous donor to the ROM Financial Aid Program.  Jan was also a volunteer to St. Joseph Hospital drug rehabilitation program. 

PATRICIA GALLAGHER: Born December 8, 1938.  Died June 21, 2013. She was a valued member of ROM. During her membership, Pat was active in the Madrigals and Chorus and also served as Treasurer, Recording Secretary and Membership Chairman.  She was the yearbook editor.  The 2012 -13 ROM yearbook received a commendation from the Michigan Federation of Music Clubs for outstanding yearbook.

BEVERLY ANN BUGBEE:  Beverly was born March 11, 1934 in Oscoda.  She died February 2013.  She was a long time resident of Ferndale and a member of Hazel Park Baptist Church.  She was a member of Royal Oak Musicale and sang in the Women's Chorus for a few years.  She was a kind, gentle lady devoted to her daughter Kelly and grandchildren.

BETTY SMITH:  Long time member who died February 5, 2013.  Betty joined ROM in 1966, and was named a Life Member.  She served as Co-counselor and Counselor for the Youth Musicale, as Vice-president in 1972-73, and President fro 1974-76.  She hosted the performing workshop for many years, and served on many committees.

MINA GRANT:  Long time member of ROM, died January, 2013.  Memorial Service will be February 22, 2013 at Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church, Ferndale.  Mina joined ROM in 1978 and received a 25 year recognition pin in 2003.  She served ROM as Cairman of music in hospitals program in 1982-83, Social Chairman in 1981-82, Historian 1984-84; and Historian for Eastern District 1990-93.

DENNIS DAKIN:  Husband of Nancy Dakin who sings in the women's Chorus and Madrigals, died December 28, 2012.  Dennis was very helpful in setting up the sound systems for ROM Programs, and played a part in the December Chorus Program.  Memorial Service at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on January 13, 2013.

JOHN LEE:  Husband of Marilyn Lee, who sings in the Women's chorus and Madrigals, died on December 29. 2012.  John was very supportive of ROM, and Marilyn's work with ROM, and was an appreciative audience  member for ROM programs.

NANCY SHOUP:  Nancy Hurley Shoup was born in Detroit on May 26, 1938, and died December 5, 2012.  She graduated from Marygrove College with a degree in music, and was a talented pianist, who in her early years was a piano entertainer, and played the piano, calliope and organ at Greenfield Village.   She was an active member of ROM for many years,; joined ROM in 1963.  She served in many capacities, including the Music in Hospitals Program, as a counselor for Youth Musicale, as Membership Chairman, social chairman, Program chairman, and Ways and Means Chairman.  She also served as corresponding secretary, vice-president and president of ROM, as well as Southeast District Secretary.  She was also active in the community, having served as President of the Royal Oak Interclub Council.  She was named Royal Oak Distinguished Citizen of the Year in 1999.  A memorial service was held on December 15, 2012 at Shrine of the Little Flower Church.

ONNALEE (LEE) AHRENS:  Lee died on September 13, 2012.  She joined ROM in 1989, and was a loyal member, faithfully attending and helping with ROM programs.  She sang second soprano with the ROM Women's Chorus for many years. She was a faithful member of First Congregational Church.

MURIEL SHEPARD:  Died August 30. 2012.  She was 92 years old.  Muriel was a teacher and principal in Royal Oak for many years until her retirement in 1976.  As a member of ROM she helped in many ways, but enjoyed helping at the card parties.  She will be missed but we are blessed to have known her.

ELLEN L. HATCH:  Died January 11, 2012.  Ellen was an active member of ROM for many years.  She sang with the Madrigal Singers and the Women's Chorus. She also performed for ROM programs.  Ellen had been music director and director of the chorus at her previous church.  She also served as Vice-President and President of ROM, and was active on many committees, including the program committee.


CAROLE ANNE VARGA, born June 4, 1943, died, June 20, 2011.  Carole joined ROM in 2002.  She was an active member of both the ROM Women's Chorus and the Madrigal Singers.  She also sang with the Archdiocesan Chorus of Detroit, and her church choir at St. Joseph's church.  She contributed her organizational talents to ROM  by arranging for programs for our performing groups, by actively participating in the Program Committee, and in the Auditions Committee.  She served as vice-president of ROM from 2002-2004, and President from 2004-2006.   She and Laura Dougherty brought ROM to the Royal Oak Community's attention by developing and setting up an exhibit on ROM at the Royal Oak Public Library each year during National Music Week.  Carole also assisted with the Southeast District of the Michigan Federation of Music Clubs through her work on the yearly MFMC State Convention.  ROM is honored by a bequest in her will for our student aid program.

GLENN CRUMLEY, died 2011.  Glenn and his wife Marjorie, were active members of ROM for many years.  Glenn and his family served as missionaries in  Africa for many years.  Their daughter, Ruth, a talented soprano, was a ROM financial award winner.  Glenn and Marjorie served ROM by acting as tea chairmen for both our May and December programs for many years.

DOLORES DOOLITTLE, died February 2, 2011.  Dolores and her husband, Miles, were long time members of ROM.  She was a part president of ROM, and was editor of the ROM yearbook for many years.  She frequently did outreach musical programs in nursing homes and retirement homes.

BLODWYN STEPHENSON, born July 5, 1917, died, March 21, 2011.  Blodwyn wasa talented  pianist, who performed ROM programs, both as a soloist and as a member of a piano duo.  Her daughter, Sheila, was a ROM Financial Award winner.

JOE FISCHER, born, died  2010..  Joe and his wife served as hospitality chairmen for ROM programs each month for many years.  After he became a resident of All Seasons Retirement Community he welcomed ROM's Madrigal Singers for performances.
